The swirl flowmeter operates under the same technology as the Vortex Flowmeter. The vortex flowmeter is a kind of measuring fluid vibration instrument. It adopts anti-vibration structure design and advanced signal recognition algorithm. It has good anti-vibration performance and a low range of lower limits, which can achieve the ideal measurement of process control or energy supply.
It takes advantage of vortex shedding principles that occur when a flowing fluid come up against a bluff obstacle in its path. Additionally, the swirl flowmeter adds a ‘twist’ in conditioning the fluid, which results in the reduced installation considerations mentioned above, while improving performance.
Vortex flow meters are best suited for flow measurements where the introduction of moving parts presents problems. They are available in industrial grade, brass, or all plastic construction. Sensitivity to variations in process conditions is low and, with no moving parts, wear is relatively low compared to other types of flow meters.
The swirl flowmeter forces incoming fluid through a fixed swirl-inducing element (Swirler) located at the upstream inlet of the meter body.
The Swirler imparts a tangential velocity to the fluid, and then accelerates the flow through a reduction in the meter body bore. The primary fluid rotation caused by the Swirler has a low pressure zone at its core.
A Vortex Flow Meter is typically made of 316 stainless steel or Hastelloy and includes a bluff body, a vortex sensor assembly, and the transmitter electronics – although the latter can also be mounted remotely (Figure 2). They are typically available in flange sizes from ½ in. to 12 in. The installed cost of vortex meters is competitive with that of orifice meters in sizes under six inches. Wafer body meters (flangeless) have the lowest cost, while flanged meters are preferred if the process fluid is hazardous or at a high temperature.
